Emotion Charades

Introduction

Emotion Charades is a playful, engaging game designed to help children recognize emotions in themselves and others. This activity encourages kids to explore different emotions through movement and facial expressions, making learning fun and interactive.

Materials Needed

  • Emotion cards (printable or homemade) with different emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised, etc.)
  • Small container or bag to hold the emotion cards
  • Timer (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Cards

  • Write or print out different emotions on small pieces of paper or index cards. If possible, use pictures to make it more engaging.

Explain the Rules

  • One player picks an emotion card from the container without showing it to others.
  • They act out the emotion using facial expressions, gestures, and body language—without speaking!
  • The other players try to guess which emotion is being displayed.

Encourage Discussion

  • Once the emotion is guessed correctly (or after a set time), discuss it briefly:
    • “What are some situations where someone might feel this way?”
    • “How do we recognize this emotion in others?”
    • “What can we do if we or someone else is feeling this way?”

Rotate Turns

  • Keep taking turns until everyone has had a chance to act out at least one emotion.
  • For an extra challenge, act out scenarios that could cause a specific emotion instead of just the expression.

Wrap-Up Reflection

  • Discuss how recognizing emotions in others can help with communication and friendships.
  • Ask: “What was the easiest/hardest emotion to act out?” and “How do we show emotions differently?”
