Using visual supports benefits children with autism in several ways. First of all, some kids struggle to follow verbal instructions so using visual supports can help them know what is expected. Also, it’s common for children to have anxiety and act out when they don’t know what to expect so a visual schedule helps them know what to expect. Plus, visuals can be used to help children communicate their wants and needs, and also engage in social interactions.

Visual Schedules

Visual schedules promote independence in children. Kids can learn to check their schedule and do what is next without relying on constant direction from a parent or caregiver.

Your visual schedule should:

  • Depict the activities that will occur, and in what sequence
  • Show transitions within the day (like changing activities or environments)
  • Promote independence
  • Can be created for the whole day, or broken up into chunks of the day (for example you could have a morning routine and an after-school routine)

PECS

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a form of augmentative/alternative communication for individuals with autism and other communication challenges. PECS allows your child to communicate through pictures and teaches them to spontaneously initiate communication. It also makes it easier for you to communicate with them. Generally, when using PECS, the child exchanges a picture card with a “communicative” partner (parent, teacher, aid, etc) who immediately honors the request.

Children need to learn that communication is a highly effective way to have their wants and needs met. Therefore, you should always honor what your child requests when learning to use PECS.

Visual Supports

Visual supports should be simple, easy to understand graphics that your child can learn easily. If your child cannot understand what the picture is they will not be able to use the visual correctly.

These 160 PECS graphics are high-quality images created to do just that.
